It’s D-Day for election posters… and cable ties

By Hayden Moore

THE DEADLINE for the removal of election posters has arrived, with candidates facing a €150 fine if they’re not gone by 12am tonight

Should any posters remain up when the clock strikes 12 tonight, candidates will be in breach of the Litter Pollution Act 1997.

Candidates have been spotted out and about this week taking down posters, with the Ballymount Civic Amenity offering an innovative way of recycling the election litter.

Panda Waste Management will recycle all election posters and cable ties free of charge in their recycling centres around the country – with its Ballymount Civic Amenity the nearest.

The issue has been raised yet again about the effect that election posters have on the environment as questions continue to be asked as to whether they are necessary.

“With posters unceasingly popular around Ireland in the run up to elections, their impact on the environment has been a source of frustration amongst the Irish public in recent years,” said a Panda spokesperson.

Any posters dropped into the Ballymount Civic Amenity will be shredded to make products like paint tubs, while the cable ties will be recycled into fruit and vegetable trays.

Ballymount Civic Amenity is open Monday to Saturday, from 9am to 5pm.
