Let’s create a vibrant base camp in Tallaght

Dear Editor,

AS part of the strategic plan for the next 7 years in South Dublin County Council, Tallaght Community Council (TCC) want to see our natural landscape and tourism amenities ambitiously and sensitively developed to achieve their maximum potential.

Tallaght Stadium is a public venue and plays host to a variety of sporting events across many disciplines.

Rovers Tallaght Stadium 3

It is a positive sporting facility to have in our town - along with many, many others. It's unique selling point as a venue is its location and breath taking backdrop mountain view.

TCC believe any future development of the stadium should fully recognise and leverage its location as the official Start of the renowned Dublin Mountain Way (DMW) walking route, proximity to the Luas, hotels and the fantastic mountain range view which acts as a majestic backdrop to this outdoor basecamp "in waiting".

Our vision for the stadium includes a public viewing tower, a coffee shop and suitable outdoor amenities to maximise the tourism potential in the county town of the great outdoors.

Just think about what the Guinness Hopstore skybar did for the liberties - why not have that ambition & confidence for Tallaght?

Tallaght stadium could then become a public ally owned recreational hub for sports matches, mountain trips, walking festivals, cycling trips, school tours and visiting holiday tours.

In our vision, this development would increase the range of uses for the stadium across complementary activities, increase footfall outside of the existing narrow sporting match times.

This would also increase the income generation potential of the venue - not to mention the additional positive social, reputational and economic benefits an expanded function would provide.

Tallaght IS the gateway to the mountains.

Tallaght is the start of the Dublin Mountain Way.

Tallaght is the County Town of South Dublin.

Let's create a vibrant "base camp". Believe.
