Mythical You - Find out who you are in irish myth

By Sandy Dunlop

Sandy Dunlop has been A coordinator WITH the Bard Mythologies project since 1995. They run events, workshops and a summer school using the oral traditions to tell timeless stories.

As part of TallaFest, on Saturday, Bard Mythologies in collaboration with the Civic Theatre are offering a quiz where you can find out what character you are in Irish Myth.

You can come to the stand at the Civic Theatre and/or do the quiz before hand at The Bard team will give you a myth name badge that you can attach to your clothes.

You can then enjoy the rest of the Festival, seeing if you can meet yourself – Fionn meet Fionn, Queen Medb meet Queen Medb, or perhaps Cú Chulainn might meet Ferdia who he killed with the Gáe Bolga, or Grainne might meet Diarmuid, the man she elopes with against the wishes of Fionn, or who knows? Or you can find out who your family members are in Irish Myth, or indeed your friends.

The ‘Which Archetype are You Quiz’ is an opportunity for you to get involved in learning more about the wonderful Irish Myths and Legends that are such a rich and extraordinary part of Ireland and Global Cultural heritage.

Not everyone is aware that Ireland has a unique and vast mythic and oral literature in no small part because the Romans never got to Ireland and nor did writing.  This was for a 1000 years longer than much of the rest of Europe.

What the monks did when they came was a great job in recording this oral tradition.

Now, what is also not widely known is the extensive connections there are between Tallaght and this mythic heritage. In a significant number of ways Tallaght is very much part of this tradition.

The Civic Theatre in Tallaght and Bard Mythologies have organised ‘Legends of Tallaght’ which is an opportunity for local people to come and hear these stories and connections and to explore their relevance to today.

There is coffee/tea and biscuits and an opportunity to meet our team and fellow participants before we start the series of oral tellings. We’ve got off to a terrific start and new participants are most welcome.

The events are on alternate Mondays at 7.30pm with tea/coffee available from 7pm.

The next ‘Legends of Tallaght’ event is on June 24th and will be exploring Tallaght’s connections to Fionn and the Fianna, the much loved warriors and poets who served to protect and help the Irish people.

The next session will look at the local connection to Fionn’s son, Oisin, and the beautiful otherworld figure Niamh Cinn Óir who takes him away to Tír na nÓg.

So, do come to the Civic Theatre stand at Tallafest, find out who you are in the Myths… and if you feel inspired, begin your exploration into your own Tallaght Myths and Legends. We Hope to see you all soon at the Festival.
