Three-storey detached apartment building for older people refused

PLANS for a three-storey, detached apartment building for older people at Slade Road and Castle Road in Saggart have been refused permission by South Dublin County Council.

The planning application was lodged by Aimsitheoir Deantoireacht Teoranta last February, where they outlined their plans for a three-storey, detached building consisting of six two-bedroom apartments to be used exclusively for “age-friendly use for older people”.

Permission was also sought for a recessed vehicular entrance, communal parking, a bin and bike store, a public footpath to the west site boundary, internal landscaping works, a pedestrian entrance to Slade Road and Castle Road and the re-use of the existing Mill Pond as a public recreational facility.

The Saggart Village Residents’ Assocation lodged a submission in relation to the plans, where they stated the development would “impact negatively” on Saggart Village residents and road users.

The association said that the road network around and through Saggart has “insufficient capacity and is already overcrowded”.

They added that the proposed development would be located at a “significant historical site” as it was where Dean Swift’s home was located and contains the last Mill Pond in Saggart.

South Dublin County Council refused permission for the development this month, on a number of grounds.

These grounds include concerns that the development would set “an undesirable precedent” for future development in the area, and that the plans contravene the development objective of the County Development Plan, under which the subject site is zoned for open space and recreational uses.
