THE Civic Theatre will play host to The Royal Shakespeare Company’s performance of ‘Venus and Adonis’, which will see the tale of unrequited love being brought to life with puppets next month.

The stage in the Civic will be rebuilt to accommodate the performance, which will feature puppets that are over a metre tall, that will see Venus falling in love with Adonis but with tragic consequences.

Marionettes, rod, shadow and table-top puppets will bring a new lease of life to one of Shakespeare’s earliest works, while still staying true to the emotive and engrossing narrative that has led to the poem’s continued success and popularity.

Director of The Civic Theatre Tallaght, Michael Barker-Caven, said: “We’re honoured to be welcoming this production to Dublin, audiences can expect a truly extraordinary display of narration, music and puppetry.

“The play has received incredible reviews internationally and its arrival to Dublin is an opportunity for the public to come and experience a totally unique piece of theatre”.

Inspired by both Japanese Bunraku and Jacobean Court Masque puppets, the puppets will tread the boards with style and passion.

The show will be narrated by the actor Suzanne Burden, while the puppeteers will be Louisa Ashton, Ailsa Dalling, Edie Edmundson, Rachel Leonard and Stan Middleton.

The performance is a collaboration between The Royal Shakespeare Company and The Little Angel Theatre, one of the UK’s leading puppet theatres.

‘Venus and Adonis’, which is suitable for ages 14 and up, will be at the Civic Theatre from October 3 to 7, with tickets costing €25 or €23 concession, with student tickets costing €10.
