Byrne hoping to get the chance to captain Terenure in Senior Cup

TALLAGHT man Rory Byrne is hoping to get the opportunity to captain Terenure College in the Leinster Rugby Schools Senior Cup this year.

The 17-year-old flanker, who is also a Thomas Davis GAA clubman and plays his club rugby with Terenure College RFC, was appointed team skipper back in December having made his Senior Cup debut earlier that year when Terenure were beaten by Clongowes in the opening round.

Relishing the prospect of leading out the team once Covid guidelines allow for a resumption of play, Byrne said “It was something that I would have always wanted and I’m really happy.

“I don’t feel so much the pressure with the captaincy, because, at this stage, all I want to do is just get back out and play.

“I think this team could do well. We haven’t played any games, so it’s very hard to know, but I think we’ve a good squad there and hopefully we can do well” he added.

Making the move to Terenure College from St Mary’s NS when he was in third class, Byrne began playing rugby and lined out in the Junior Cup in secondary school.

He played second row for Terenure last season when they were undone in the first round of the Senior Cup in Donnybrook.

“It was close for much of the game, but they just got a few scores and pulled away” recalled Byrne who will be hoping his side gets the opportunity to exact revenge, having been drawn against Clongowes again in this year’s competition.
