Crumlin boxers poised for National Elite Finals

CRUMLIN Boxing Club will have plenty of interest in tomorrow night’s National Elite Champion-ship Finals in the National Stadium.

John Joe Nevin secured his place in the Men’s Middleweight decider after he came through a tough test from Camlough’s Ferghus Quinn, winning 4-1 on Monday night.

“Quinn really put it up to him. It was a tough fight but it was Joe’s skill that got him through. He rallied at the end” said Crumlin Coach Philip Sutcliffe.

“Every round was close. Quinn kept coming at him and really Nevin survived the early stages, but he got a grip on the fight and won out. He’s only young too” he added.

The Leinster Senior champion will continue on to the decider where he will face off against Rathkeale’s Jason Harty who beat Nevin’s Crumlin clubmate Jack Brady on a unanimous decision in his respective semi final.

“This is going to be a real technical fight” insisted Sutcliffe. Joe is going to have to find a way through but he’s well capable of winning it, they both are. It’s going to be close.”

It was the end of the line also for Crumlin light-weight Paul Alexandrut after he lost out to the highly experience Brandon McCarthy of St Michael’s Athy in their respective penultimate round bout.

Crumlin’s Leona Hournihan is, meanwhile, hoping to equal the Crumlin club record of John Kinsella by making it three straight National Elite titles on Friday.

She is one step away from successfully defend-ing her Light Heavyweight crown and standing in her way of that is last year’s heavyweight champion Nell Fox from Rathkeale.
