Echo Sports Year in Review 2020: December

A CHALLENGING year ended on a high note as Dublin’s senior mens and ladies football teams enjoyed more All-Ireland success, Peamount United raised the Women’s FAI Cup and The Echo and its Sports Awards partners paid tribute to local sports volunteers.

Dublin GAA signed off on an tough year with All-Ireland title victories for both the county’s senior men and ladies while the Under 20 men came up just short in their respective decider against Galway.


Niall Scully (Templeogue Synge Street) and Robbie McDaid (Ballyboden St Enda’s) featured for the Metropolitan seniors in their triumph over Mayo that made it a six All-Ireland titles in succession for the Blues.


The Jackies, which included Thomas Davis star Siobhan McGrath, saw off Cork to secure the Brendan Martin Cup for a fourth straight season.

Peamount United senior women’s team completed a double after a 6-0 demolition of Cork City in Tallaght saw them add the FAI Cup to the Women’s National League they captured the previous month.

Tallaght’s Jack Woolley won bronze at the European Taekwondo Championships Olympic Weight Categories in Bosnia & Herzegovina.

Tallaght and National Centre swimmer Brendan Hyland set a new National 100m ’Fly record of 52.58.

The Echo and its partners also honoured the work of five sports volunteers in the community, namely Crumlin GAA Club’s Ruth Gavigan, Thomas Davis’s David Kinsella, Crumlin Running Club’s Leon Johnson, Women Who Run Ireland founder Tara Wilson-Black and Paul Donnelly of Crumlin United.
