Keaney brings curtain down on his time with Dublin

By Hayden Moore

CONAL Keaney has brought the curtain down on his Dublin career with the Ballyboden St Enda’s man announcing his retirement this morning.

Over the course of 20-years, Keaney enjoyed massive success in both hurling and football with the county set-up.

Winning six provincial titles and league silverware, Keaney, in a brief message on twitter revealed he would no longer be available for selection.

Following the announcement, Dublin GAA paid tribute to Keaney on Twitter saying: “An incredible career over two decades in the blue jersey.

“Thanks for everything, Conal.”

Keaney made his debut for the senior hurlers in 2001 before swapping codes four years later.

After committing to the footballers, he played a key role as Dublin stormed to success in the Leinster Championship for five years in a row.

But after spending much of 2010 watching from the sidelines, Keaney decided to return to the inter-county hurling set-up with a budding outfit that had just recruited the services of Anthony Daly as manager.

Success came thick and fast under Daly, with Keaney playing an influential role as Dublin ended a 72-year drought to claim National League honours.

Perhaps his crowning achievement with the inter county team arrived in 2013 when he helped the Boys in Blue bridge a 52-year gap that separated Dublin from their previous Leinster Senior Hurling Championship title.
