Celebrate with us

JUST because we’re staying apart, doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate together!

In recent months, a number of families and community groups have marked and celebrated special events through the pages of The Echo and on Echo.ie.

Never has it been more important to stay connected, with Gerry Bates, whose family surprised him with an article in The Echo for his 70th, reconnecting with people from his past following his birthday message.

Gerry Bates, who lives in Millbrook Lawns, has always given back to his community and has helped the homeless, been involved in St Dominic’s Community Response Project, and was awarded Tallaght Person of the Year 2008 in recognition of his unwavering commitment to the area.

He also taught many young people in the area as a religion, English and history teacher for over 30 years in Old Bawn Community School.

Speaking with The Echo about his family’s birthday message, Gerry said: “I would usually shy away from something like this, but it was lovely.

“People who I haven’t been in contact with for years, contacted me.

“It was amazing really.

“It definitely created a lot of community connections at a time when we need them.

“People I had lost touch with over the years, got in touch, especially people I was involved with in Old Bawn CS.”

In March, the family of Carmel Birmingham celebrated her 90th birthday in The Echo through the sharing of past family celebration pics.
