Local parkruns to mark World Cancer Day

By Mary Dennehy

THE Irish Cancer Prevention Network is teaming up with parkrun to mark World Cancer Day, and everyone is invited to take part.

The Network hopes, through parkruns nationwide, to highlight the positive impact of physical activity on reducing cancer risk and living well with and beyond cancer.

Parkrun World Cancer Day compressor

The Parkruns will take place in Tymon and Marlay Park

The Irish Cancer Prevention Network is made up of the HSE National Cancer Control Programme, Breakthrough Cancer Research, the Marie Keating Foundation and The Irish Cancer Society.

Open to everyone, parkruns are free, weekly 5km timed runs – with local events taking place across local parks, including Tymon, Marlay, Waterstown, Corkagh and Griffeen.

On February 8, local parkruns will mark World Cancer Day and highlight the positive impact of physical activity.

A spokesperson for the HSE, said: “The serious impact of cancer on the lives of thousands of Irish people means we must use every opportunity to reduce the risk of the disease and support those affected.

“There is strong evidence that exercise may lower the risk of seven types of common cancer – breast, endometrial, kidney, bladder, esophageal, stomach and colon.

“Physical activity after a cancer diagnosis may improve survival in breast and colon cancer.

“Parkrun organise free weekly runs around the country and are open to everyone – please bring a friend to your local parkrun on 8 February.”
