Old Bawn CS students encouraged to embrace third-level opportunities

OLD BAWN Community School is this week flying the flag for third-level education, with all students being encouraged to think about their career choices and dreams for the future.

November 20 to November 26 is College Awareness Week, and locally schools are embracing the programme and the third-level opportunities available to them.

In Old Bawn Community School (OBCS), students launched and celebrated the week by designing a mall mural that highlights secondary school as a starting point in developing a post-secondary school plan.

A College Ready flag was also raised on the school grounds, while more than 200 students created symbols that contained their college and career choices and dreams of the future.

Teacher Amy Doherty told The Echo: “College Awareness Week is a fantastic initiative that we are delighted to be involved with.

“It allows us to focus on the many pathways to college available for our students.

“The campaign is all about getting people talking about post-secondary education and highlighting the opportunities that are out there.”

She added: “We feel it’s important that our students know that a third-level education is both worthwhile and achievable. We encourage our students to carefully consider their post-secondary school plan.”

The school also believes in the importance of “working hard and making informed choices” alongside inspiring students to begin their journey towards a third-level education.

A national programme, College Awareness Week is run by the Higher Education Authority, the National Association of Principals and Deputy Principals, the confederation of Student Services Ireland and the Trinity Access Programmes – with support from AIB and Perrigo.
