Purple Light Up Movement

MINISTER Finian McGrath celebrated International Day of Persons with Disabilities in CRC Firhouse on Tuesday, reports Mary Dennehy.

The event also marked the launch of the Central Remedial Clinic’s (CRC) purple ribbon to match the #PurpleLightUp movement.

Speaking on the day, Breda Gavagan, CRC Firhouse Manager, said: “The reason we are here is to launch the CRC Purple Ribbon for 2019.

“Today is also the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, a global event designed to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilise support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities.”

According to Ms Gavagan, the CRC Purple Ribbon grew from an art project led by the people who come to the centre in Firhouse, which developed into the design of a burgundy-coloured ribbon launched last year.

However, the group has decided to change the colour of the ribbon to more closely tie-in with the Purple Light Up movement and the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

“The theme for [International Day 2019] is ‘The Future is Accessible’, meaning that we want to look to a future where the barriers which stand in so many people’s way no longer exist”, Ms Gavagan said.

“Although here in Ireland we have made significant progress towards equality and inclusion for persons with disabilities and we now even have a dedicated Government Minister, we are still fighting for basics like accessible public transport, accessible buildings, access to suitable accessible respite facilities, changing places and the availability of meaningful home-care packages.”

CRC Firhouse also wished to thank Firhouse Community College students who got involved with the launch by selling purple ribbons in The Square.
