Vintage charity drive is a great way to celebrate rural community

By Mary Dennehy

CLOSE to 150 tractors, vintage cars and old motorbikes took to Tallaght’s rural roads last Sunday as part of an annual event that celebrates the area’s local farming community and its shared heritage.

Taking place for the past decade, the annual Tractor Run saw 148 vehicles embark on a 14km charity drive through Bohernabreena and up into Glenasmole in aid of the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association.

Pitching tent in the field beside St Anne’s Church, money was also raised for Glenasmole National School and St Anne’s parish.

Alongside the traditional Tractor Run, there was plenty of fun and entertainment staged, with bouncy castles, a Wheel of Fortune and plenty of ice-cream on offer.

Local farm animals also turned up on the day, with children being giving the opportunity to meet ducks, geese, hens, lambs, sheep and a donkey and her foal.

Some local sheep dogs also showed off their skills.

Speaking with The Echo, local farmer, and former Tallaght Person of the Year, Donie Anderson said: “Everyone seemed to enjoy the day.

“It’s a great way to celebrate Tallaght’s rural community and it gives people living across the area that don’t know much about farming the chance to learn about the rural community here in Tallaght.”

He added: “We’d like to thank all of the local businesses and people who supported the event, and to everyone who turned up on the day.”
